The origins of Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH) date back to 1910-1920 and was originally known as Sewahaji Hospital. In 1956 the name was changed to Princess Margareth Hospital. Shortly after independence in 1961 it was called Muhimbili Hospital until 1976 when it was converted to Muhimbili Medical Center.
Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH) was established by MNH Law ACT of pariliament No. 5 of 2000 of Parliament from the split of the former Muhimbili Medical Center (MMC) into Muhimbili National Hospital and Muhimbili University College of Health Sciences (MUCHS), now Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS).The separation took place in November 2004. Currently, MNH is the national referral hospital and teaching hospital with 1,500 beds,serving 1,000 to 1,200 outpatients per week and admitting 1,000 to 1,200 inpatients in a single week. |
