Hydrogen plants developer APEX Group said on Thursday that it has agreed to acquire three plots of land in Lubmin, northern Germany, in order to build up to 600 MW of electrolyser capacity for the production of green hydrogen.
The planned facility, which will be owned and operated by APEX, is expected to generate up to 43,000 tonnes of hydrogen annually, avoiding over 400,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.
The first construction phase, which should complete in 2027, will require an investment of EUR 210 million (USD 232.2m), APEX said.
The electricity required for the electrolysis process will come from renewable sources in Northern Germany. APEX also said that talks are being held with other interested parties at the site to jointly build facilities for electricity and water supply and for wastewater disposal.
APEX is acquiring the plots with an area of 5.2 hectares from EWN Entsorgungswerk fuer Nuklearanlagen GmbH, a German firm specialising in the safe dismantling of nuclear power plants. The price is EUR 1.7 million. Additionally, the company has secured an option to buy a further 1.1 hectares of land.
The purchased plots are located on the site of the decommissioned Greifswald nuclear power plant. The land is close to several offshore wind farms with a feed-in capacity of around 1.5 GW as well as an existing substation. Notably, Lubmin is expected to be linked to a future hydrogen pipeline, allowing APEX to distribute its green hydrogen in southern Germany. There are also plans to connect to Europe’s first hydrogen pipeline network, the company said.
