The pair of short rheas or rheas (Rhea pennata) run at full speed between the thorny bushes and the tall grasslands that cover the paleobed, one of those ancient beds that the Bermejo River flooded in a time lost in memory. They brake in unison for a few seconds, as if inviting the driver of the all-terrain vehicle to accelerate and disappear from his territory. They repeat the scene a couple more times as if they were playing cat and mouse until they get tired, turn to their right and get lost in the thicket of the bush.
The heat tightens in the morning of El Impenetrable National Park, in the extreme north of Argentina. The thermometer marks 41 degrees Celsius, the sun falls mercilessly and at this hour the Suris are the only ones who dare to defy it. The climatic harshness of the Gran Chaco expresses its magnitude only in part —in the height of summer, temperatures usually exceed 50 degrees—, but it is enough to make its effects felt in the body of the unaccustomed urbanite. The tereré (cold mate) that the guide Gabriel Borsini serves from his co-pilot position helps to quench thirst: "The heat in this area is treacherous," he affirms, displaying his experience, "because it is dry and although one does not notice that he perspires, he dehydrates the same”.
Impenetrable is the historical name given to the lands of the arid and semi-arid Gran Chaco that occupy a vast sector of the countrys geography. It is a qualifier that responds to two reasons: the tight swarm of branches and stems that form the bushes in the undergrowth and limit the possibility of moving with some freedom; and the scarcity or absence of watercourses, which prevents staying in the forest for long periods of time.
