Two German-based energy-focused companies plan to set up a project in South Africa to produce and market synthetic fuels through renewable energy sources.
The process will also include the use of seawater which will be run through a desalination plant.
On Wednesday, 26 July 2023, the PNE Group and SET Select Energy GmbH (SET) announced the project and signed a corresponding declaration of intent in Hamburg.
The project on South Africas West Coast is intended to produce up to 500,000 tons of e-fuels per year, which are obtained from green hydrogen produced via electrolysis, they said.
The electrolyser with a nominal output of 1GW would be powered by energy from wind farms and photovoltaic systems.
"Since the project site does not have a large grid capacity, the decision was made to produce e-fuels from wind and solar energy and not to supply the electrolyser via the national grid.
"The water required for electrolysis is not obtained from scarce drinking water reservoirs, but comes from the sea and runs through a desalination plant before it is used," the companies said. |
