Work Detail | A PSE&G utility project on Bloomfield Avenue apparently hit the brakes on Tuesday, one day after its scheduled start. The utility company was to start doing some repairs near the Bloomfield Avenue overpass near the Montclair-Glen Ridge town line on Monday, ahead of a larger state-funded repair project on the overpass. But on Tuesday, Borough Administrator Michael Rohal said that the PSE&G work had been "postponed indefinitely" due to the ongoing Transportation Trust Fund crisis. PSE&G spokesperson Lindsey Puliti said that the state Department of Transportation ordered PSE&G to stop work on the project late Monday afternoon, a few hours before work was to start. She said she was unable to comment on the reasons for stopping the project, referring questions on the subject to the state. "It's really their project," she said. On Monday, Puliti said that workers were going to be installing new electrical conduits and conductors. The project had been expected to take about four weeks. The work was to have been done during the nighttime and early morning hours: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. on weekdays, outside of peak travel times. The borough released a notice indicating that NJ Transit bus service was unlikely to be affected because of the work: "The Glen Ridge stop on the eastbound side of Bloomfield Avenue in front of the apartments will not be affected, as it is beyond the work and traffic control limits. The stop on the westbound side of Bloomfield Avenue, at the signalized intersection with Pine Street/Maple Street, is within the project limits and obviously the proposed traffic control. Given the planned traffic control access to this stop, it is not restricted and should be able to operate normally during construction." The overpass crosses over the NJ Transit tracks between Montclair and Glen Ridge, near the Glenmont Square shopping center and the Palace Car Wash. The span was among several local bridges found to be in bad condition by a Transportation for America study in 2013. It is anticipated that the bridge work will result in a shutdown of at least one travel lane in each direction, which has led to Glen Ridge town officials discussing ways to re-route traffic if necessary. In June, Glen Ridge officials said that the bridge work would have some impact on cars turning into and out of the parking areas for businesses near the overpass. It is also expected that NJ Transit may have to run diesel-only trains on the line during the weekends, in order to allow the overhead power lines running beneath the overpass to be shut off. Rohal said that it was uncertain what the timeline on the bridge repair would be, due to the TTF shutdown. But he said that NJDOT would be having a meeting with Glen Ridge and Montclair prior to the start of repairs. Several of Glen Ridge's local road projects are on hold for 2016 because of the trust fund shortfalls as well: Herman Street, Cambridge Road and Edgewood Road, Rohal said. |
