The government of Newfoundland and Labrador has shortlisted nine projects from just as many companies to move forward to stage two of the Crown Land Call for Bids targeting wind-hydrogen developments, including an CAD-8-billion (USD 6.1bn/EUR 5.4bn) green fuels project by EverWind Fuels.
Andrew Parsons, Minister of Industry, Energy and Technology, announced the launch of a deeper stage-two examination last week after the stage-one review process sorted through 24 bids made by 19 companies. This next phase of the process should be finalised by the end of August. The successful bidders will be granted exclusive rights to pursue project development on Crown land.
On Thursday, EverWind Fuels confirmed the progress of its green fuels project on the Burin Peninsula in response to the announcement by the Canadian province. It said it expects to erect half a dozen meteorological (MET) towers in the project area by early autumn for the purposes of collecting live wind data.
"In the last year, we have advanced pre-FEED engineering, acquired strategic private land, and have been collecting environmental data since November 2022, which positions our Burin Peninsula project as one of the most advanced in the province,” said Trent Vichie, CEO and founder of the company. He added that the project has lured “some of the largest offtakers in the world.”
EverWind’s project calls for the installation of a wind farm with a total capacity of more than 2 GW, which will generate electricity for the production of green hydrogen and ammonia. The company has a similar project in Nova Scotia.
