Work Detail The contracts will include works for Port of NEOM, Al Habtoor Tower, AlUla International Airport, Bay Residences and more During May, the Middle East saw several large-scale and ground-breaking launches­, from Bugatti Residences, Dubai Reefs and Bahrain’s solar-powered port, to DAMAC’s Canal Crown, Emaar’s eight new properties and more. And as the regional construction sector concludes Q2 2023, Construction Week Middle East recaps the top contracts awarded in May 2023. Some contractors that stood out with their contract wins since April include BESIX, CRC Dubai, Shapoorji Pallonji, and SIBS, among others. Top contracts in May 2023 1. BESIX, Modern Building Leaders (MBL), and Boskalis: Port of NEOM Scope of work: Initial dredging and quay wall development BESIX, in collaboration with Modern Building Leaders (MBL) and Boskalis, has secured a contract from NEOM for the initial phase of dredging and quay wall development at the Port of NEOM in Saudi Arabia’s northwest region. Positioned near the Suez Canal on the Red Sea, this port serves as the main gateway to NEOM and is undergoing a significant transformation to become the world’s most advanced, efficient, and sustainable port. 2. CRC Dubai: Mega Waterfront Residential Project of Falcon Island The leading lifestyle developer in the Northern Emirates, Al Hamra, has awarded the main works package for its mega waterfront residential project of Falcon Island to Dubai-based Construction and Reconstruction Engineering Company (CRC). CRC, which is a part of Dorra, has more than 80 years of construction heritage in the Mena region and will be responsible for construction of the 502 villas and townhouses ranging from two-to-seven-bedroom on Falcon Island, featuring north and south islands. 3. Shapoorji Pallonji Mideast: Da Vinci Tower in Business Bay, Dubai Dar Global has awarded the fit-out works for the Da Vinci Tower in Business Bay to global contractor Shapoorji Pallonji Mideast. Awarding the fit-out works follows a rigorous selection process, and Dar Global is confident that Shapoorji Pallonji Mideast is the ideal partner to execute and complete the project. The fit-out works for the Da Vinci Tower will ensure that every aspect of the tower’s interiors, including the fittings, fixtures, and finishes, meet the highest standards of luxury and sophistication. 4. Petrofac and China Huanqiu Contracting & Engineering Corporation: Major Petrochemical Plant Petrofac, leading a joint venture with petrochemical industry specialist, China Huanqiu Contracting & Engineering Corporation (HQC), has received notification of a conditional award by STEP Polymers SPA (100% Sonatrach subsidiary) to execute a significant petrochemical project in Algeria. The plant will be located at the Arzew Industrial Zone, west of Algiers. Covering the design and build of two major integrated processing units, the contract includes the delivery of a new propane dehydrogenation unit and polypropylene production unit, as well as associated utilities and infrastructure for the site. It is expected to produce 550,000 tons of polypropylene per year. 5. China Railway 18th Bureau Group: Al Habtoor Tower Dubai recently made headlines with the announcement that it will host the world’s largest residential tower, a project led by Al Habtoor. Now, Al Habtoor Group revealed that they have chosen the contractor for the iconic AED3.7 billion venture: China Railway 18th Bureau Group Ltd. The Al Habtoor Tower will rise among the towering structures along Sheikh Zayed Road, offering a lavish living experience. With a staggering 1,701 keys and 81 floors, this multi-billion dirham development is slated for completion within a 36-month timeframe. 6. Webuild and Shibh Al Jazira Contracting Company: High-speed railway between The Line and Oxagon Scope of work: Design and build for the majority part of the railway Webuild and its joint-venture partner Shibh Al Jazira Contracting Company (SAJCO) have signed a contract worth circa $1.5 billion to design and build 57 kilometres of a high-speed railway in NEOM, along the north Red Sea coast of Saudi Arabia. The contract covers the design and build for the majority part of the Connector, a railway connecting Oxagon, NEOM’s centre for advanced and clean industries with THE LINE, a future-forward city. 7. Egis: Private Aircraft Terminal at AlUla’s International Airport Scope of work: Expansion of hangar and complete architectural design and engineering package Saudi Arabia’s Royal Commission for AlUla awards two major contracts to multidisciplinary engineering and operations company Egis. The contract includes the development of the Private Aircraft Terminal, otherwise known as a Fixed Based Operator or FBO, at AlUla’s International Airport. 8. Gulf Asia Contracting Company: Bay Residences Scope of work: Main contractor Gulf Asia Contracting Company, a major civil and industrial contractor in the gulf region, has been awarded as the main contractor in, Ras Al Khaimah’s leading property developer, RAK Properties’ flagship community Bay Residences, now in the second phase of its development following piling works completion. The project is situated on Hayat Island, and will have 324 apartments in two towers, including studios and three-bedroom units. Moreover, according to the release, the second phase of the residences is sold out, which is indicative of the UAE’s growing demand for beachfront properties. 9. SSH: Waterfront development in Kuwait Scope of work: Design consultancy and supervision services SSH, a prominent firm specialising in master planning, infrastructure, building design, and construction supervision in the Middle East, has secured a contract to provide design consultancy and supervision services for a captivating waterfront development in Kuwait. Stretching over 9.7 km, from the Yacht Club to Diyafa Village near Kuwait Towers, the project aims to enthrall both locals and visitors with a wide range of leisure activities and year-round events. 10. SIBS: Over 2000 apartments for NEOM Scope of work: Engineered Equipment Supply Contract Scandinavian Industrialized Building System (SIBS), an international leader in modular building, has signed an Engineered Equipment Supply Contract to deliver 2,174 apartments to NEOM, Saudi Arabia’s $500bn (AED1.84tn) giga-project. The living spaces, situated within the office cluster of accommodation for primary staff, will be distributed among 35 buildings, and are purposed for workers assigned to planning, engineering, and construction of NEOM. Set to be delivered and commissioned by Q3 2024, the apartments will be developed with high-quality design and layout to ensure a high standard of living, the statement reported. 11. Egis: Jeddah’s 87,500m2 Double Tree Hotel Scope of work: Design review and supervision consultancy services Egis has been appointed by Taiba Investments Company to provide design review and supervision consultancy services for the Double Tree Hotel in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. This prestigious hospitality project is a significant real estate development project for Taiba Investments Company, and Egis is well-positioned to support the company in achieving its vision. The four-star Double Tree Hotel will be built in a prime location in Jeddah, with an area of approximately 8,800m2, located near King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz square overlooking the Red Sea. The hotel will have 35 floors and 405 keys, with a built-up area of 87,500m2. Taiba Investments Company and Hilton Hotels have joined forces to develop this iconic hotel project.
