Work Detail | US Healthcare solutions provider Shearwater Health has expanded its presence in the Philippines piggybacking on a strong Filipino workforce that boosts prospects for the clinical process outsourcing (CPO) business. Shearwater Health opened its second facility in the country at the Net Park building in Bonifacio Global City. It expects to broaden its employee base to over 2,000, making it one of the largest non-hospital employers of licensed clinicians, Tom Kendrot, the company’s chief financial officer, said during the grand opening of its new office space. “We believe we’re on a larger if not the largest employer of licensed clinicians outside of the provider space, provider meaning hospitals,” he told reporters on Friday, referring to over 1,500 licensed clinicians, most of whom are nurses as well as a small number of pharmacists and physicians, that are currently employed under the company. Mr. Kendrot said that 40% of their nurses have US license while the rest are licensed here in the country. Anshum Sinha, senior vice president and country manager for Philippine operations, said the company is now searching for possible locations to house its third facility, citing a large demand from their US client base. “We are in the process of evaluating options in Central Visayas,” he told reporters in the press conference, adding that they are considering Iloilo and Davao City, among others. “We should be able to formalize the locations in the next 2 to 3 months to have it operational by end of first quarter,” he said. Formerly known as HCCA, the company opened its first facility in Cebu Business Park in 2014. Shearwater Health has two lines of businesses -- one for nursing recruitment under HCCA International and another for CPO under HCCA Health Connections. Company Chief Executive Officer David Bartholomew said that they have sent over a thousand Filipino nurses to the United States since 2000. On the other hand, its outsourcing segment, which accounts for a larger employee base in the Philippines, aims to play the same role as that of nurses overseas without having to leave the country. “What’s happening is you have nurses that are leaving bedside, so who’s going to do this for them? So there’s a shortage which helps our nursing recruiting business but we can do that same work here and do that in a managed environment,” he said, pertaining to the nursing shortage in the US. |
