Work Detail Steve Pettes, manager of the Mesa Development Center, said he remembers riding along with his grandfather and father in 1964 after his grandpa had a vision about water on the East Mesa. Pettes watched his grandpa find the water by “dousing” or “witching” the first water well — a way of locating underground water by using a peach tree branch.

Now, 50 years later and with 307 customers, the Pettes family has sold the Mesa Development Center to Las Cruces Utilities.

LCU held an informational meeting Aug. 18 at Oñate High School to explain that there will be no interruption of water service; answer questions; and advise Mesa Development residents how to make the transition seamless. To avoid paying a standard utility deposit, including account activation and processing fees, residents of Mesa Development must fill out an LCU application for water service before Sept. 28.

“It’s a win-win for the customers,” explained Carl Clark, utilities RES/TS administrator. “We will be revamping the systems, installing new meters and more fire hydrants. The city gains more water rights to pump water, and it will not take away from current residents.”

Guadalupe Holguin, a long-time resident of Mesa Development, said “it will be good for the community.”

Lucy Hinojosa is excited about the LCU plans for more fire hydrants and more water pressure for residents. Christina Huang noted that LCU has made the process very easy for the residents.

Jose F. Provencio, business services administrator, said “customers will see a decrease of about $11.70 in their water bills" (excluding taxes and franchise fees) based on the average of 9,000 gallons of water consumption.

LCU is striving for a smooth transition for all residents in the Mesa Development area. Customers are reminded to bring their driver’s license to the Customer Service offices at Las Cruces City Hall, 700 N. Main St. for the application process. Hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. For information, call 575-541-2111.
