Work Detail Technology group Wärtsilä has entered into a repeat order with EDF Renewables UK to develop a grid-scale energy storage system (ESS) in Bramford, United Kingdom (UK). The 57 MW/114 MWh project will facilitate the transition to a decarbonised power grid. It will help the UK reach net zero. The order was placed in Q1 2023, and delivery is scheduled for Q1 2024. This project—Wärtsilä’s sixth with EDF Renewables UK and Ireland—builds on the two businesses’ solid, protracted collaboration. The UK energy storage portfolio of Wärtsilä now surpasses 1 GWh. The new storage facility will be attached to the transmission network. This will enable the integration of renewable energy into the grid. The facility will increase the power system’s resilience. Furthermore, it will automatically charge and discharge to balance supply and demand. Like its sister project in Oxford, the Bramford project will be able to support any future advancements in EV charging and the electrification of public transportation. The energy storage system in Bramford Wärtsilä will provide its advanced GEMS Digital Energy Management Platform and GridSolv Quantum system for the project. GEMS will be the primary controller for the entire ESS installation, including communication with the grid and outside traders. The projected solar farm, also being developed by EDF Renewables UK and still awaiting a planning decision from Mid-Suffolk District Council, will be situated next to the Bramford battery storage complex. GEMS will offer data and insights to inform trade parties and performance for comprehensive asset management, just like its sister facility in Sundon. Additionally, GEMS will make electric market trading and frequency response two of the balancing services possible for the UK grid. In addition to the energy storage system in Bramford, Wärtsilä’s current initiatives with EDF Renewables include UK energy storage facilities delivered in 2021 in Oxford and Kent. Furthermore, three additional projects are under construction in Birmingham, Coventry and Sundon.
