Work Detail Cal Poly Pomona engineers will be able to aim higher, thanks to a $1.5 million grant from the Air Force Research Laboratory.

The grant, announced Tuesday at Cal Poly Pomona, will be used to upgrade the university’s engineering labs, including purchasing specialized mapping equipment.

According to the university, the equipment will primarily benefit faculty and students in the aerospace engineering department, along with other engineering departments and the colleges of science and agriculture, supporting projects such as 3-D topographical mapping, vegetation analysis and crop dusting.

“I am very excited that we’ll have all the equipment to do cutting-edge research,” Aerospace Engineering Professor Subodh Bhandari said in a university news release. “We’re one of the few universities in the world doing this kind of multidisciplinary research.”

The grant was arranged with the help of Rep. Grace Napolitano, D-El Monte.

“I don’t represent Pomona any more, but I always come” out for events, Napolitano told university President Soraya M. Coley, linking arms with her.

“We know we’re still very near to your heart,” Coley said.

The university has previously received $5 million in federal funding with Napolitano’s help, according to the university, including subsonic and supersonic wind tunnels and other aerospace labs and equipment.

“We thank the Air Force for working with us on awarding this grant to Cal Poly Pomona to expand its world-class aerospace engineering research and innovation facilities right here in the San Gabriel Valley.” Napolitano said in a statement. “Cal Poly is educating the next generation of engineers to meet the need for high-tech jobs in our region, enabling more bright young minds to become leaders in a growing industry.”
