Work Detail | Work began Monday on a project to make the Alisal Bridge more capable of withstanding an earthquake, but the work could delay traffic a bit until its anticipated completion in February 2017. The seismic retrofitting project will involve drilling holes into which concrete will be poured to create deep-seated pilings for the 800-foot bridge that spans the Santa Ynez River on Alisal Road south of Solvang. Abutments also will be reinforced, and cable restrainers that prevent the bridge sections from becoming unseated at the hinges will be replaced in the $1.8 million project. Alisal Bridge not only provides a link between the two Alisal Ranch golf courses but also serves as a route to Nojoqui Falls Park from Solvang. It's also a popular place for people to soak up sun and beat the heat by dipping into the river during the summer months. The upgrades are part of the federal Highway Bridge Replacement and Rehabilitation Program, and most of the cost is being covered by grants from that program and from Caltrans. The city is picking up about $22,000 of the tab. Construction will require partial lane closures on the bridge between 7 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, Solvang officials said. “The retrofit project will cause temporary inconvenience because of the nature of the work,” a city spokesman said. “Please drive responsibly and follow all traffic-control measures. “Your cooperation will ensure a safe working environment for the construction workers and minimize delays,” the spokesman said. Bengal Engineering performed the engineering and design for the retrofit, and Cushman Contracting Corp. is doing the construction work. |
