Work Detail The Dutch company Airturb has developed a 500 W wind-solar hybrid system that includes a vertical axis wind turbine and a solar plinth with four 30 W solar panels. Netherlands-based startup Airturb has developed a 500W hybrid wind and solar power system that can be used for residential or off-grid applications. “The system consists of a vertical axis wind turbine with a modified helical Savonius shape and a base with four monocrystalline panels,” CEO Serkan Kilic told pv magazine . “It has a load on the roof of 131 kg/m2”. The solar base consists of a galvanized steel and rubber structure. It measures 1.14m x 1.14m x 20mm and weighs 35kg. It can accommodate four solar panels with powers of 30 W each. It includes four Eco Line ES30M36 modules from the German company Enjoy Solar. “The base can also house other types of solar panels,” explains Kilic. The small wind turbine measures 1.8 m x 1.14 m x 1.14 m and weighs 70 kg. It has a ballast weight of 70kg to 100kg and can work in the temperature of -25ºC to 60ºC. Each panel is made of fiberglass reinforced polyester, weighs 1.5kg and measures 1.5m x 0.7m x 1.5mm. The wind system also includes a 300 W PMS axial flux alternator (PMSA) that converts mechanical energy into electrical energy characterized as three-phase alternating current. The hybrid system incorporates a DualVolt hybrid inverter with a power of 500 W. “It is designed, developed and manufactured by Airturb,” says Kilic. The device measures 540mm x 430mm x 139mm and weighs 25kg. It must be placed separately on the site, with a maximum distance to the system of 25 meters. Airturb offers the systems in two versions, with or without solar panels. “Both models are pre-assembled by Airturb and delivered on-site by the installer,” explains Kilic. “Currently, only the system that includes the base and the solar panels is available. The system without the base and the solar panels is being developed and we will offer it from the third quarter of this year.” The complete package with the solar base and the DuoVolt wind inverter costs 4,235 euros ($4,626), not including installation costs, according to the companys website. “The system is designed and developed in the Netherlands, manufactured in Turkey and assembled in the Netherlands,” explains Kilic.
