Iraq is poised to resume work on two stalled projects - a road project in Baghdad and a maternity hospital project in Karbala – soon, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Planning said.
Abdel-Zahra Al-Hindawi told Zawya Projects that the Ministry undertook field visits to understand the obstacles to their completion and present remedial measures to the concerned authorities.
He said the 86-billion-Iraqi-dinar ($66 million) Baghdad-Wasit entrance project, which aims to improve road safety and reduce traffic jams and accidents, is 40 percent complete.
The project extends from Diyala Bridge to Al-Madaen for 8 kilometres, and consists of two-way roads of four lanes each, service roads, street lighting and three pedestrian bridges.
Al-Hindawi said project is currently stalled due to relocation issues associated with power, water, sewage and telecom utilities, siting of security check points, residential encroachments, adding that the Ministry is coordinating with the concerned authorities to remove the obstacles.
He said the Ministry is also working to resume work at the stalled 300-bed maternity hospital project in Karbala. The project’s completion rate is more than 36 percent.
The major obstacle to the project is the presence of housing units that have blocked access to one of the hospital entrances.
Al-Hindawi said the Ministry is in talks with the contracting company to speed up work.
The project comprises of main hospital building with 10,000 square metre built-up area, a residential building for doctors, water treatment and solid waste disposal units and a helipad.
