Work Detail The Egyptian government has inaugurated a 36MW solar power station at the Sukari gold mine in addition to a batteries storage system with a capacity of 7.5MW to supply the facility with electricity. The project is expected to help reduce costs and enhance production sustainability. Sukari is Egypts first large-scale modern mine. It is served by tarmac roads, off-grid power, solar and a 25km water pipeline fed by the Red Sea. The station is in the Eastern Desert, an area that has the highest level of solar radiation and exposure for about 10 hours per day. It is estimated that the power station will also help reduce fuel consumption in the mine by 22 million litres per year and cut carbon emissions by 60,000 tons of C02 equivalent-Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Tarek El Molla said: We have wealth, potential, and growth in exploration activities, global companies, success experiences, cadres and experiences that qualify us to achieve wealth from the mining sector. International companies driving mining sector growth in Egypt EI Molla said during a recent visit that research and exploration activities in Egypts mining regions are growing in the light of the entry of international mining companies into the Egyptian market through the proposed auctions. This activity is enriched with diverse experiences and technologies and opens the door to economic discoveries and better exploitation of mineral resources. Growing research and exploration activities provide job opportunities amid the activitys need for support services and labour intensively, said El Molla. Centamin, who mines Sukari alongside the Egyptian government, said it has at least 14 years of production ahead and 11.11 million ounces in gold resources and, more broadly, across Egypt. The Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources announced recently that the country aims to produce between 450,000 and 480,000 ounces from Sukari during 2023. Since the start of production at the Sukari mine until the end of last February, 5.2 million ounces were produced, with revenues estimated at about $7.5 billion, said El Molla.
