Work Detail Amprius has obtained third-party verification of the performance of a battery cell that offers high power density in a lightweight package. California-based Amprius has verified the performance of its silicon anode battery cells with third-party tester Mobile Power Solutions. The results show that the cell model provides 504 Wh per kg and 1321 Wh per L at 25 ºC. According to Amprius, the silicon anode cell is about half the weight and volume of the leading conventional lithium-ion cells available on the market. The cells have applications in the rapidly growing electric aviation sector and could be integrated into electric vehicles. According to the company, the combined demand for batteries for electric aviation and light electric vehicles is estimated to exceed $100 billion worldwide by 2025. Amprius batteries offer 200% autonomy compared to leading graphite batteries. However, they are lighter and smaller than other batteries with the same energy content. “This latest validation continues Ampriuss journey of producing the worlds most powerful battery cells and sets an industry benchmark for next-generation battery technology that will ultimately revolutionize how high we fly. how far we travel and how long we can use our devices,” said Jon Bornstein, president of Amprius Labs. Customers can adjust battery cell platform specifications to meet the engineering needs of a project. The customizable platform allows customers to choose between increasing the energy content of a battery without increasing weight, reducing weight in applications that require fixed energy content, or a combination of both. More power is important for increased runtime, range and endurance, while lighter packs increase energy efficiency. The stacks are planned to be integrated into the AALTO Zephyr, a high altitude platform station (HAPS). The solar-electric telecommunications aircraft offers persistent ground observation with a ground sampling distance of 18 cm, near real-time video and images from the stratosphere, day and night. “We look forward to leveraging the Amprius 500 Wh/kg cell to further develop Zephyrs unrivaled stratospheric endurance capabilities,” said Pierre-Antoine Aubourg, Technical Director of Airbus subsidiary AALTO HAPS. "Amprius is a valued current supplier with a great track record, and we are confident that their battery will deliver the capacity we need." Amprius has a research and development laboratory in Fremont, California. It has recently signed a letter of intent for the construction of a 774,000 square foot facility in Brighton (Colorado), with a manufacturing capacity of up to 5 GWh. The US Department of Energy (DoE) aims to improve battery performance to stabilize the supply chain of critical materials and offer attractive products to vehicle buyers. “While there are already several electric-powered vehicles on the market, further improvements to batteries could make them more affordable and convenient for consumers,” according to the DoE. The DoE funds advanced battery development, systems analysis, and testing to achieve these goals.
