Work Detail | Pacific Gas & Electric, the utility that serves most of northern California, has put out a call to developers of solar and wind projects up to 20MW to take part in a new programme that will directly connect consumers to renewables plants. PG&E, whose coverage area includes San Francisco, is asking developers of projects in the 500kW-20MW range in central and northern California to submit proposals by the end of September for its new “Regional Renewable Choice” programme. The programme will allow home- and business owners to work directly with renewables developers and subscribe to the output from new projects before they are built, buying anywhere from 25% to 100% of their electricity needs. Customers will pay for the new energy directly, and receive a bill credit from PG&E on their monthly electricity statements. PG&E is looking for 75MW of new renewables capacity to start, with the winning projects to be chosen in a competitive bidding process by December 2016. The programme is open to solar, wind, biomass, and other renewable sources. PG&E notes that half of US homes and businesses are unsuited for rooftop solar installations due to space limitations or insufficient sun exposure. “The new Regional Renewable Choice program is part of our ongoing commitment to support the growth of solar and other renewable energy sources in California,” says Aaron Johnson, PG&E vice president of customer energy solutions. “Building on PG&E’s Solar Choice program launched earlier this year, this new program enables our customers to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from their electricity usage and allows them to directly be a part of California’s clean energy future.” |
