Germany is "further deepening" its climate and energy partnership with Africa in a bid to increase research capacity into renewable energy and green hydrogen on the continent.
The announcement was made in Berlin on Tuesday at the 10th anniversary celebration of the climate competence centres - the West African Science Service Centre on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use (WASCAL), and the Southern African Science Service Centre for Climate Change and Adaptive Land Management (SASSCAL).
A joint declaration of intent to expand the centres and establish a strategic hydrogen partnership was signed by Federal Research Minister Bettina Stark-Watzinger in the presence of nine African ministers.
"Tackling climate change is a task for humanity. The two climate competence centres SASSCAL and WASCAL stand for regional research for solutions to the most urgent challenges of climate change as well as renewable energies and green hydrogen in southern and western Africa/ said Stark-Watzinger.
"So far, we have invested 253 million euros in this. With the joint declaration of intent, we are further deepening our climate and energy partnership today: for even better research on site, for even better training for young people and for new cooperation in the field of green hydrogen.
"We have already used 68 million euros to set up this cooperation. SASSCAL and WASCAL are door openers for setting up a global supply chain for green hydrogen. Africa is ideally suited for this." |
