Work Detail |
Several Latin American countries, chief among them Brazil, are building gas-to-power projects.
BNamericas provides a list of the principal ones by capex.
1. Manzanillo combined cycle plant (Dominican Republic)
The project entails the construction, installation and commissioning of a combined cycle plant in the municipality of Pepillo Salcedo (Manzanillo), Monte Cristi province.
Capex: US$1.75bn
Capacity: 800MW
Owner: Ministry of Energy and Mines of the Dominican Republic
Stage: Under construction
Due online: December 2026
2. Lins thermoelectric plant (Brazil)
The plant is being built in the municipalities of Lins and Guaiçara, São Paulo state. It will use natural gas, supplied through a pipeline derived from Gasbol.
Capex: US$1.1bn
Capacity:2km, 440kV transmission lines, water pipelines 8km, gas pipelines 8km, natural gas generation 2,050MW
Owner: Lins Thermoelectric Plant
Stage: Advanced design and engineering
Due online: December 2027
3. Gatun (Panama)
The natural gas-fired thermal generation plant is in Telfers, near the Gatún locks of the Panama Canal, 2km from the port city of Colón. A location near the Panama Canal was selected to facilitate access for global and regional natural gas shipping companies, and a planned regasification terminal.
The plant would contribute to lower local energy prices and displace bunkers and diesel as sources of energy generation.
Capex: US$1bn
Capacity: Natural gas generation 670MW, transmission lines 230MW, transmission lines 16.3km
Owner: National Authority of Public Services
Stage: Under construction
Due online: March 2024
4. Our Lady of Fatima Thermoelectric Plant (Brazil)
Includes a carbon steel pipeline dedicated to supplying the plants gas, a transmission line with nine towers that will be connected to Furnas substation, a water supply line from the Macaé River and an effluent outlet. The plant will use natural gas from the Campos basin and treated at the UTGN station of Terminal Cabiúnas, or gas from the pre-salt fields that reach the same terminal through the Rota 2 gas pipeline.
Capex: US$903mn
Project Capacity: Gas pipelines 17.5km, transmission lines 1.6km, water pipelines 2.5km, 312l/s, transmission lines 345kV, natural gas generation 1,355MW, gas pipelines 4.77Mm3/d, among others.
Owner: Nossa Senhora de Fátima Thermoelectric Plant
Stage: Early works
Due online: December 2023
5. Pacific Energy (El Salvador)
The project entails the construction and operation of an LNG terminal and a power generation plant to supply distribution companies. Construction will require around 1,000 workers while operation will demand 100. It is located in the port of Acajutla, 66km west of San Salvador.
Capex: US$900mn
Project Capacity: Transmission lines 230kV, natural gas generation 378MW, gas pipelines 1.9km, transmission lines 44km
Owner: Pacific Energy
Stage: Under construction
6. Block I of Piratininga thermoelectric plant (Brazil)
The block is part of the technological substitution of units 1 and 2 and entails the replacement of unit 1 of the thermoelectric plant, which will use natural gas as fuel. The project will be located in the southern part of São Paulo.
Capex: US$847mn
Project Capacity: Natural gas generation 1,737MW
Owner: Metropolitan Water and Energy Company
Stage: Awaiting construction decision
7. El Campesino combined-cycle plant (Chile)
Entails the construction and operation of a natural gas combined cycle plant in Bulnes and Pemuco, Biobío region.
Capex: US$804mn
Project Capacity: Combined cycle 640MW, transmission lines 16.7km, substations 500kV, transmission lines 500kV
Owner: GM Holdings
Stage: Awaiting construction decision |
