Work Detail |
Finally, and after waiting for it for a long time, the government of Rodolfo Suarez celebrates that the Nation has launched the tender to convert the former Zoo into the Ecopark. This is a relief for the provincial management since the closure of one of the main public spaces in Mendoza was one of the strong criticisms from different sectors, but also because in this way Suarez will be able to inaugurate one of the the most important public works of recent years, whose budget exceeds $1,000 million, after what would be "the project of the century", Portezuelo del Viento, was almost completely discarded.
The confirmation of the work came from the Inter-American Development Bank (which is the one that will finance the project) at the beginning of June. And from that moment the provincial Executive awaited the call for tender, which was paid by the Ministry of the Interior, and which took place this Friday. The official budget is $1,086,750,000.

Suarez hopes to open the Ecopark before the end of his administration
The news comes at a key moment, in a pre-election year, so for any government to advance with public works is vital. Thus, finally Mendoza will have the funds to reconvert the former Zoo into an Ecopark, a work that has been on standby for more than six years and that many Mendozans claim, in addition to the refunctionalization of Cerro de La Gloria.
The funds that the IDB will contribute are non-reimbursable (that is, the Province must not return them) and are a remnant of the remodeling work on the Costanera. Specifically, the Province had that money to carry out some work and "the governor decided that it was a priority to open this park again, with a new perspective, which implies a new paradigm of the use of space for education, care for the environment, anthropized but with natural characteristics, prioritizing animal welfare and not the mere exhibition of these, ”explained some time ago from the Executive.
What is proposed is a complete reconversion of the circuit and the entrance, the construction of new buildings. There will be many animals, native and those that are in the process of recovery, there will be new trails, new lights, benches, drinking fountains, a new irrigation system, sewers, among other things.
After receiving the approval of the IDB, finally today the National Government published the call for bids for all companies interested in the Cerro de la Gloria Multimodal Project and Ecoparque to present their technical and economic offers.
According to the statement, “The Argentine Republic has received from the Inter-American Development Bank the loan to partially finance the cost of the Provincial Management Strengthening Program I, and it is proposed to use part of the funds to make the payments of the contract corresponding to the “Ecoparque in the City of Mendoza – Province of Mendoza”.
Multifunctional
works The works, which will be carried out for 14 months, consist of the construction of 5 buildings on the property to generate a sustainable space with recreational, educational and multifunctional facilities.
The work is one of the priorities of Governor Rodolfo Suarezs management since it will allow the reopening of the promenade and will be one of the most important works in the last 100 years due to its environmental, heritage, tourist and social importance.

The history of the Ecopark project
On December 27, 2016, the Legislature of Mendoza gave final sanction to the rule that established the end of the Zoo. The then governor Alfredo Cornejo understood that the cultural changes indicated that it was necessary to create a new place, and the Ecopark was the model chosen to supplant the historic park that had been inaugurated in 1941.
However, the gross tasks on the property have not been developed. Although in 2019, the Government presented the masterplan, through a national competition (which had several international awards), the process did not continue since all the funds were used to contain the Covid-19 pandemic.
The works in the space that was closed to the public focused on the separation of species, castrations, tuberculosis and brucellosis studies. Some minor refurbishment works were also completed.
