Work Detail | Rehabilitation work on a small bridge in Upper Makefield will begin in mid-September, forcing closure of the road on both sides of the span until the project is completed, according to a Bucks County administrator. The county commissioners approved last week the contract to repair the bridge, located on Brownsburg Road East over Jericho Creek in Upper Makefield, just south of the Jericho National Golf Club. Kevin Spencer, director of general services for the county, says work should be completed by the end of the year. "We are upgrading the features on the bridge, bringing it up to PennDOT's current safety standards," said Spencer. "There will be concrete repair, some guardrail work and sediment removal." Spencer said a traffic study shows that about 100 vehicles per day pass over the 46-foot bridge. A detour is still being worked out and will be submitted to Upper Makefield officials for approval. The county commissioners voted last week to a $478,000 contract with Mercer County-based Clearwater Construction to carry out the work. Funding for the project will come out of state impact fees allocated to Bucks via Act 13 of 2012. Under the legislation, the Pennsylvania Utility Commission collects fees on natural gas wells each year and disburses the money. Last year, Bucks received $493,803 from Act 13 funds. The Brownsburg Road bridge is one of three bridge projects that will be completed by the end of the year, Spencer said. The Kansas Road bridge over Little Neshaminy Creek in Warrington has been closed since March as PennDOT crews replace the deteriorated deck and beams. Bucks County closed a heavily traveled bridge on Milford Square Pike over Unami Creek in Milford back in May 2014 following a safety inspection. Spencer said that project should be finished by November. Infrastructure upgrades will continue well into 2017, Spencer said, with at least nine more bridge projects on the schedule. Five of those repairs will be funded through the township's new $5 vehicle registration fee enacted last December that started generating revenue in April. "We will start the bidding process over the winter, with construction expected to start in the early spring," said Spencer. Those projects include: County Bridge No. 209 on Church Lane over Haycock Creek in Nockamixon, contracted to Gilmore & Associates for $69,238; County Bridge No. 152 on Valley Park Road over North Neshaminy Creek in Plumstead, contracted to McCormick Taylor for $68,780; County Bridge No. 263 on North Fourth Street over Tohickon Creek in Quakertown, contracted to McMahon Associates for $62,970; County Bridge No. 306 on Woodhill Road over Jericho Creek in Upper Makefield, contracted to Traffic Planning and Design Inc. for $43,493; County Bridge No. 352 on Hill Road over Three Mile Run in East Rockhill, contracted to Whitney Bailey Cox & Magnani for $55,088. The other four bridges that will be addressed next year include the Walnut Street bridge in Perkasie, Stony Bridge Road in Bedminster, a bridge on Frosty Hollow Road over Mill Creek in Middletown Township and a Jacksonville Road bridge over Little Neshaminy Creek in Northampton. |
