Work Detail A consortium consisting of Norwegian renewable energy producer Scatec, Abu Dhabi-based fertilizer producer Fertiglobe, the Sovereign Fund of Egypt, and Cairo-based engineering and construction contractor Orascom plan to construct a 100MW Green Hydrogen Plant in Ain Sokhna, a town in the Suez Governorate of Egypt. The facility, which upon completion will be the first of its kind in the Northern Africa country and the largest green hydrogen plant in the world. It will also be the largest green ammonia plant worldwide producing 90,000 tonnes of green ammonia per year. The project is expected to be fully completed and operational by early 2024. Plug Power to supply and install electrolyser at the 100MW Green Hydrogen Plant in Ain Sokhna Recently, Plug Power Inc., an American company engaged in the development of hydrogen fuel cell systems that replace conventional batteries in equipment and vehicles powered by electricity was selected by the aforementioned consortium to supply and install electrolyser capable of converting 100 MW of electricity into hydrogen using Polymer Electrolyte Membrane (PEM) technology. In other words, the PEM technology is the electrolysis of water in a cell equipped with a solid polymer electrolyte that is responsible for the conduction of protons, separation of the gases produced, and electrical insulation of the electrodes. The power for the electrolyser will come from the grid, backed by renewable energy certificates to ensure that it is green.
