RAK, November 17, WAM / The Municipality of Ras Al Khaimah launched the Green Public Procurement Program that supports the adoption of sustainable procurement practices for government agencies in the emirate for the coming years through the newly developed Green Public Procurement Guide, in a virtual event that witnessed the presence of many officials from government agencies and institutions Private and media representatives. The launch of the Green Procurement Program comes after the initial steps taken by the government of Ras Al Khaimah in the past years to purchase products and services that have a negative impact on the environment .. And in 2018, the Environment Protection and Development Authority in Ras Al Khaimah launched the Green Fishing Ports .. and during the same period The municipality Barjeel launched a list of green building conditions, and through the building modernization program, more sustainable buildings have been promoted recently. The Public Services Department has also adopted green procurement in many of its projects. After the success of these successive initiatives, a specialized team was formed to develop the framework and ensure the adoption of green standards in purchasing decisions in a more organized manner. The Ras Al Khaimah Municipality’s issuance of the Green Public Procurement Manual comes as a result of the study conducted by the team, and a wide consultation process with stakeholders and procurement experts followed. Going forward, the Ras Al Khaimah Finance Department will lead the green public procurement program and coordinate the implementation of the program across the government. Green public procurement will include procurement criteria for product categories that are purchased periodically, such as paper, furniture, light vehicles, air-conditioning, household appliances, carpets, etc., as the criteria are designed to be easily adopted in government tenders. Munther Mohammed bin Shukr, Director General of Ras Al Khaimah Municipality, said: From an economic development perspective, green procurement also means generating demand for green products and services, as this will stimulate the growth of the local ecosystem for experienced companies, which will support the economic development of Ras Al Khaimah in the long run. Today, we are proud to launch the Green Public Procurement Directory in Ras Al Khaimah, from which we expect not only environmental benefits, but also tangible economic benefits. He added: Green public procurement will be implemented on an optional basis, and examples of environmental leadership that exist in the government of Ras Al Khaimah will be utilized ... We expect a positive response from government agencies, given their active participation in the design phase of the guide. The green public procurement program falls under the capabilities of the Ras Al Khaimah Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Strategy 2040, which was established under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, with the aim of reducing energy consumption by 30%, water by 20%, and contributing to the generation of 20% of electricity is from renewable sources by 2040. The program contributes to achieving the goals of the UAE Green Agenda 2030 and the National Climate Change Plan 2017-2050 at the federal level, while at the international level, it supports the United Nations sustainable development goals that coincides with the UAEs commitment to the Paris Agreement, and the general framework The guidebook supports Ras Al Khaimah to participate in international reporting initiatives to reduce global carbon emissions, as it follows the greenhouse gas definitions and protocol. |
