Veolia Water Technologies has secured a contract from Qatar’s dairy producer Baladna to upgrade the existing wastewater treatment facility at its cow farm.
Veolia’s technologies will allow an increase in the treatment capacity of the plant which is located in Al Khor, north of Doha.
Furthermore, the technologies provided by the company will enable reuse of the treated wastewater for irrigation within the farm.
Following further treatment by reverse osmosis, the wastewater will be used to spray and cool the cows during hot summer months.
The barn and milk parlor flushing area of Baladna’s cow farm generates nearly 6,000 m3/day of wastewater.
Baladna managing director Ramez Al-Khayyat said: “The holistic approach to reuse treated wastewater is a key development for our company’s sustainable goals, and we are enthusiastic to be at the tip of technological breakthrough for the best interest of our products and consumers.”
The wastewater treatment plant upgrade saw the modification as well as optimisation of the treatment performance of the existing lagoons.
Veolia also provided a complementary biological process to meet the treated effluent quality that is necessary for reuse.
By upgrading the existing lagoon system, Veolia was able to optimise its process performance to meet Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) and Total Suspended Solids (TSS) removal between 80% and 92%.
The company also provided a two-stage AnoxKaldnes Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) process with complete sieve and aeration grid arrangement to further treat the effluent.
The process, which uses microorganisms for biological treatment of wastewater, allows for high treatment capacity in a small footprint.
Prior to tertiary treatment, the effluent is treated with coagulants and flocculants through a two-stage filtration made of swedish-manufactured Hydrotech Discfilters and Drumfilters.
The cost-effective filters have low energy consumption and an automatic control to optimise capacity.
A sodium hypochlorite solution pumped to the new chlorine contact tank will perform the disinfection.
Veolia designs and provides water, waste and energy management solutions. |
