Work Detail Nottinghamshire County Council (NCC) has prevailed in a bidding process to secure funding from the UK government for setting up a 5G enabled digital centre in North Nottinghamshire. The funding is for the council’s Digital Turbine Centre in Worksop which will come from the £900m Getting Building Fund of the UK government. The fund has been designed to support the delivery of shovel-ready infrastructure projects, in agreement with mayors and local enterprise partnerships to ramp up economic growth, and help in local recovery and in creating jobs. The Digital Turbine Centre in Worksop aims to bring in high value, technology focussed businesses to Nottinghamshire. FarrPoint, an IT and telecom consultant, which helped the Nottinghamshire County Council in developing the application, said that the government approved the funding to the latter after the proposal was evaluated and supported by the Derby, Derbyshire, Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Local Enterprise Partnership (D2N2). According to the company, the 5G enabled digital centre will play the role of a catalyst for developing skills, encouraging innovation and in displaying ground-breaking 5G related technological developments. Nottinghamshire County Council deputy leader Reg Adair said: “We are delighted that this project will move towards its next stage thanks to this successful bid. “Now more than ever, developments like these will help boost post-pandemic economic growth for Nottinghamshire by providing a hub where skills, innovation and businesses can really thrive.” FarrPoint said that the combined effort of the council’s digital connectivity team and its consultants consolidates on the long term relationship provided by it. This includes GIS mapping and support for procurement for the Nottinghamshire superfast broadband programme, said the company. FarrPoint CEO Andrew Muir said: “We’re thrilled to have helped our valued client, Nottingham County Councill secure funding for its 5G Innovation Hub. “5G can support so many new use cases both in urban and rural geographies and the journey is only beginning. I hope this hub attracts and develops brilliant talent in the local area and produces some truly game-changing technology advances.” Earlier this year, the Nottinghamshire County Council launched the £10m 5G Connected Forest project with an objective to offer a 3D experience to visitors at the Sherwood Forest Country Park.
