Watch webinar: Procurement with the Environmental Cost Indicator (MKI) If you want to assess the environmental impact over the entire life cycle of a service, supply or work, you can use the environmental cost indicator (MKI). The lower the MKI value, the more sustainable the service, delivery or work. But how do you apply the MKI now? Sara Rademaker (PIANOo) and Paul Prinssen (Eco Review) explain in this webinar the step-by-step purchasing plan with the MKI and give a practical example. (June 23, 2020) Life cycle assessment (LCA) Sara Rademaker opens with a brief explanation of the concept of life cycle analysis. In such an analysis you calculate what goes into energy and raw materials per phase during the life cycle and what comes out of emissions - emissions and waste. You calculate that on a point scale. You express the environmental effects in a price: the environmental cost indicator. Not surprisingly, 61% of the participants in a poll indicate that they consider using the MKI for assignments in construction and infrastructure. 39% indicate that they consider the instrument for facility assignments. 46% of the participants in the poll indicate that they have no experience with the instrument at all, 28% have it planned. Step-by-step plan for MKI application Sara Rademaker developed a practical step-by-step plan Purchasing with the Environmental Cost Indicator for PIANOo, together with Paul Prinssen (Eco Review). In the webinar she explains the steps you take as an organization to include MKI in a tender. Identify the impactful product categories (so you dont overload the market) Determine the contract form Include MKI as a requirement, award criterion or a combination of both Determine the scope of the environmental cost indicator: do you only look at production or do you also take maintenance with you? Determine whether MKI is requested at product or contract level Make demands on the MKI and LCA Prepare reference calculations Determine the verification requirements Determine the contract management Clearly record the choices in the tender documents Practical example: maintenance of the provincial road Applying the environmental cost indicator correctly requires knowledge and preparation. Many organizations therefore engage an LCA advisor for environmental advice and to train employees in working with LCA and MKI. Paul Prinssen of Eco Review explains in the webinar on the basis of a practical example how you go through the steps and which choices you can make. It concerns an order for major maintenance on 5 kilometers of provincial road (N224), in which Prinssen was involved as an LCA advisor. The province deliberately opted for a fairly common project in order to learn from working with the MKI. He explains the most important lessons. |
