The FIA ??has launched a call for tender to adopt a unified fuel flowmeter on Formula One cars for the season 2021 as it continues to close as many gaps as possible due to the controversy surrounding Ferrari last season.
The move to adopt a unified fuel flow meter was included in the first set of technical laws for the 2021 season that were published in October.
In addition to being part of the pressure to cut costs with standard components, the meter will facilitate VIAs monitoring of any fuel-flow problems.
The new tender document fully explains the technical requirements of suppliers.
The document set March 13 as the deadline for submitting applications, with results to be announced in mid-April.
The initial contract will include the seasons of 2021, 2022 and 2023, but VIA reserves the right to extend that contract to 2024 or 2025 for reasons related to the stability of the F1 world championship laws.
The tender is an annex to Article 5.11.3 of the laws of 2021, which states the following: "All cars must use a single fuel flowmeter that is fully contained within the fuel tank, as it is manufactured by a single supplier appointed by the World Motor Sports Council according to characteristics determined by it."
The statement added: "This sensor system can only be used according to the technical department of VIA. In addition, all fuel supplied to the energy unit must pass an approved sensor system, and all of that fuel must be provided to the combustion rooms through Fuel injectors described in Article 5.11.2 ".
"VIA issued technical guidance (TD / 042-19) in 2019 to improve monitoring of fuel flow measurements and imposed another fuel flow meter for the 2020 season," VIA added regarding the tender.
"There are now two sensor systems installed on the car at the same time and this will likely continue for the 2021 season and beyond, although this may be reviewed based on a decision from VIA alone."
Similarly to all tenders, the potential supplier must determine the intended price for its product.
Via indicated that the system should not exceed the price of 5,000 pounds with a guarantee of a 100-hour operating time. Maintenance costs for any additional 100-hour operating period must not exceed £ 500. The fuel flowmeter should not be less than 400 hours in any way. "
Once the decision is made, teams will have to decide how many copies to expect for the 2021 season by May 1, and the provider must provide the first two copies that each team will use by July 1. |
