France-headquartered water management, waste management, and energy services firm Veolia, in collaboration with the Royal Commission for Jubail’s investment arm, JYIC, have broken ground on the Central Utilities and Waste Valorization Plant in Saudi Arabia’s Jubail Industrial City.
The facility, which is located with Jubail Industrial City’s PlasChem Park, will treat industrial waste streams and generate steam, cooling, and instrument air, to cover the needs of the park.
Constructed on a design-build-own-operate (DBOO) model, the plant is projected to be operational by September 2021.
Once complete, the plant will feature an incineration capacity of 60,000T per year, while maintaining necessary technology and environmental compliance standards. Veolia currently operates 29 hazardous waste incinerator lines across the globe.
The groundbreaking ceremony was held in the presence of the chief executive officer of the Royal Commission of Jubail, HE Mustafa Mohammed Al Mahdi; the CEO of Veolia Middle East, Sébastien Chauvin; and the CEO of Sadara, Dr Faisal Al Faqeer.
Commenting on the start of construction, Al Mahdi said: “We have launched a major and critical project at PlasChem Park and this development will form the foundation of future projects once completed. The Royal Commission of Jubail sees PlasChem Park as belonging to the whole kingdom of Saudi Arabia, not only to the Royal Commission. This project is a top priority for us and we are keen to accomplish it at the earliest and with minimal effort.”
Sharing his thoughts at the groundbreaking ceremony, Chauvin said: “Having been present in Saudi Arabia for the last decade, we are excited to continue our contribution towards the country’s sustainability efforts with the development of our waste-to-energy plant in PlasChem Park. Once operational, the facility will be able to safely treat and produce energy from industrial waste sources that can then be offered to companies active in the industrial park.”
The facility is also projected to provide a sustainable waste treatment solution, targeting industrial waste streams. As part of the treatment process, Veolia will recover energy in the form of steam for use within several industrial applications. This offer includes the provision of steam, cooling, and instrument air across the industrial park.
Upon its completion in 2021, Veolia’s sustainable waste-to-energy plant in PlasChem Park is expected to create 100 direct jobs in the country. |
