Work Detail The UAE firm responsible for deploying and operating nuclear energy plants, Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC), has achieved 75 million safe manhours at the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant, in line with the highest standards of safety, security, and quality required in the development of the UAE Peaceful Nuclear Energy Program. ENEC has completed more than 93% in the overall construction of four identical nuclear energy units at the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant in the Al Dhafra region of Abu Dhabi. Unit 4 is more than 83% complete, Unit 3 is more than 91% ready, and Unit 2 is more than 95% complete, the firm confirmed in a statement. Meanwhile, Nawah Energy Company (Nawah), the operating and maintenance subsidiary of ENEC, is progressing on its operational readiness activities at the plant. The loading of the first nuclear fuel assemblies into Unit 1 is expected to take place in Q1 2020, once all requirements have been met, and once Nawah has received an operating license from the UAE’s independent nuclear regulator, the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR). The four units at Barakah will be able to generate up to 25% of the UAE’s electricity by producing 5,600MW of clean electricity, preventing the release of 21 million tons of carbon emissions each year, which is equivalent to removing 3.2 million cars off the roads annually. The milestone was marked in a ceremony held in the presence of the chief executive officer of ENEC, HE Eng Mohamed Al Hammadi; the CEO of Nawah Energy Company, Mark Reddemann; the CEO of Barakah One Company, Nasser Al Nasseri; and the executive vice president and chief human resource officer of the Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), HoPyeong Lee. Working together, ENEC and KEPCO’s achievement of 75 million safe work hours without a lost-time injury (LTI) is a result of a focus on safety culture, continuous improvement of everyday work practices, and empowerment of employees to ensure their own safety. Commenting on the accomplishment, HE Al Hammadi said: “Our numerous safety programs, continuous learning and extensive collaboration with our prime contractor and joint venture partner, the Korea Electric Power Corporation, have enabled us to achieve this significant safety milestone.”
