The four-million-strong population of Jordan’s capital Amman will benefit from the expansion and rehabilitation of the Al-Shaer waste transfer station, currently the city’s only operational waste facility, thanks to EBRD support.
The Bank is providing a financing package consisting of a loan of JOD 2.5 million (€3.2 million equivalent) and a grant of US$ 3.5 million from the EBRD Shareholder Special Fund for the expansion and rehabilitation of Al-Shaer. In addition, a JOD 2.4 million (€3.0 million) loan and a grant of €3.0 million from the EBRD will support the acquisition of 25 street sweepers by the Greater Amman Municipality (GAM), the recipient of the financing.
The expansion will increase Al-Shaer’s capacity to process waste from the current 0.85 million tonnes to a minimum of 1.5 million tonnes per year. The introduction of new equipment will also improve the facility’s environmental impact by, for instance, eliminating air pollution and improving the health and safety protection of the workforce.
The new sweepers will assist GAM in managing the increasing amount of waste in the city. The new fleet will also increase coverage to 80 per cent of the municipality and improve the health and safety of workers.
Following the crisis in Syria, almost 750,000 people have sought refuge in Jordan in recent years, according to the United Nations. This represents a major challenge for the country and also puts a serious strain on its infrastructure. For example, the amount of solid waste grew by 38 per cent between 2012 and 2014.
To date, the EBRD in Jordan has been working in municipal infrastructure development with GAM since 2015, investing JOD 113 million (equivalent to €143 million) of loans and catalysed donor support from the European Union, the United Kingdom, the TaiwanICDF and the EBRD’s Southern and Eastern Mediterranean Multi-Donor Account (Australia, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Taipei China and the UK).
Since Jordan joined the EBRD in 2012, the Bank has invested over €1.3 billion in 44 projects there. |
