PNN 2563
Work Detail The Under Floor Wheel Lathe (UFWL), which was installed and commissioned at the Muttom depot of the Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL), was formally inaugurated on Thursday.

KMRL Director (Systems) Praveen Goyal inaugurated the lathe.

UFWL is used to machine the wheels of metro coaches to correct wheel profiles. The accuracy of wheel profile helps in ensuring safe operation of trains.

The machine is also used to optimise wheel profile and rail wheel interaction and minimise wheel and track wear of the coaches. UFWL comprises a heavy-duty machine installed in a pit, over which rail vehicles can pass on retractable rails.

The lathe has two tool posts, which ensure that both the wheels in a wheel-set are machined at the same time, thereby saving time and cost.

The productivity of the machine is quite high, as one train can be fully machined in one shift, with the intervention of only one operator.
