Work Detail 23 cities across the US will receive $75 million under the Youth Homelessness Demonstration Program (YHDP) from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) in-order to strengthen local networks of housing options for people below the age of 25. The $75 million YHDP grant funding for FY 2019 represents a $32 million increase above the FY 2018 level. Launched in November 2018, YHDP is a 2 year grant program that provides new youth specific homeless response resources including youth navigators, diversion and rapid exit funds, crisis housing, rapid re-housing, and provider training and technical assistance. The grant money will be used to support an array of housing programs aimed at reducing youth homelessness. “Homelessness is no way to start out in life for young people reaching adulthood. Today we make another critical investment in the futures of our youth, sparing them a life on the streets or in our shelters and placing them on a path to self-sufficiency,” expressed HUD Secretary Ben Carson. The programs will center around rapid rehousing, permanent supportive housing, transitional housing and host homes.YHDP will also support youth-focused performance measurement and coordinated entry systems to quickly connect youth with other services and systems of care.
