Work Detail | Economic Reconstruction Agency (ERA) have given a damn to safety guidelines, as its poorly equipped labourers are seen working at dangerous heights at the under construction flyover coming up in city’s most overcrowded rotary -Vikram Chowk. Even as safety equipment such as helmets, safety belts and shoes are mandatory during construction of such projects, most of the workers at the construction site work under hazardous conditions risking own lives and those of motorists passing through the ever busy rotary. The site presents a scary view while the workers hang on the gigantic columns of the Flyover carrying heavy machinery and construction material without wearing the necessary safety gears. The manual labourers are seen hammering the extensions of flyover columns, welding the iron bars while unwatchful commuters pass the road just under the extensions. A pedestrian-Rajesh Saini of Digiana said, “Haven’t you seen how they (labourers) work on the portion that has been completed now. ERA had fixed large iron bars, shattering material, supporting iron slabs on the under-construction columns just above the road without caring about the safety of commuters. All you can do to ensure your safety is rush through without looking upwards”. A biker -Arvind Singh of Bishnah said, “More than fear of getting hurt by a swinging iron bar, there is a threat of ending into a crash while plying on the potholed diversions around the under construction flyover”. Chief Executing Officer (CEO) ERA, Vinod Sharma, when contacted, said, “Barricading has been done under the columns but if our workers are working on the extensions of the columns, I will ensure that next time, they will work cautiously”. |
