The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) approved the Comprehensive Sanitation Program of the Uruguay River, an initiative that includes the comprehensive cleaning and purification of the Uruguay River in the cities of Gualeguaychú, Concepción del Uruguay, Colón, San José and Concordia. The project execution period is five years.
It is part of a strategic Plan that includes infrastructure works, with various sources of financing and that form a platform for provincial development and growth, improving the indexes of quality of life, access to services, connectivity, environmental sanitation, among others .
The objective of the program is to advance in the sanitation of the Uruguay river coasts, contributing to improve the quality of life of the population by expanding coverage and improving sewage and wastewater treatment services in the cities of the province located in the basin of the Uruguay river. The amount of financing is 80 million dollars.

In this context, the Secretary of Public Investment and Territorial Development, Elda Albornoz, said: “It is an excellent and expected news, which will allow us to access financing to expand the coverage of sewage drains, wastewater treatment, coastal sanitation and improvement of the service management capacity of the main cities of the Uruguay river basin ”.
"As Governor Bordet ordered, we worked with a deep commitment and active participation of the municipalities included in the Program together with the Provincial and National Government, in order to achieve access to financing and ensure the execution of projects" highlighted the official.
The infrastructure works contemplate the execution of new works that involve the rehabilitation, optimization and expansion of the collection, treatment and disposal systems of the sewage effluents.
Likewise, the Program promotes infrastructure investments to be complemented by improvements in the institutional capacity of the sector, in order to ensure services.
It is important to highlight that, from various binational institutions, the governments of Argentina and Uruguay, the Province and local governments participate in the control of the water quality of the Uruguay River and promote the construction of sewage effluent treatment plants to mitigate the impact Negative bacterial contamination observed on beaches and ensure water quality.
Regarding the agreements with the Municipalities, it was indicated that the Ministry of Planning will endorse it, and the responsibilities of the parties in the design and execution of the project, as well as the mechanisms for the transfer of the works, must be established. and agreements for its operation and maintenance. |
