Public utility company Hydro-Québec has revealed plans to update the Rapide-Blanc generating station located in the Mauricie region of Canada’s Québec province.
The modernisation will be carried out through an investment of more than C$610m ($454m).
Commissioned in 1934, Rapide-Blanc power station is being operated by Hydro-Québec since the 1963 nationalisation of electricity in the province.
Rapide-Blanc has an installed capacity of 204MW and is equipped with six generating units. The station’s reservoir, Blanc reservoir, has an area of 8,260 hectares.
Hydro-Québec Production president and COO David Murray said: “This work will allow the generating station to contribute to meeting Québec’s energy needs for the next 50 years while remaining profitable.
“This highlights one of the many advantages hydropower has to offer: reliable, continuous energy generation over the long term.”
Refurbishment works at the Rapide-Blanc generating station are expected to commence next year and will see the replacement of six generating units. It will also involve rehabilitation of the building, auxiliary electrical and mechanical systems and intake and spillway gates.
Currently, draft-design works are being carried out at the generating station. The company will undertake modification of a wastewater treatment system and begin preparatory work for the control room later this year.
Québec Labour, Employment and Social Solidarity Minister Jean Boulet said: “This is a significant investment for the region.
“The hundred extra workers on the job during the work will generate significant economic spinoffs for the region, especially with respect to lodging, dining and goods and services.” |
