The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is providing a €3 million sovereign loan to Georgia to co-finance the construction of a new solid waste disposal facility in the Adjara region.
Adjara is an autonomous republic of Georgia on the Black Sea coast, with a population of 350,000. There are currently five solid waste landfills in the region, none of which meets environmental standards. Two of the larger sites in Batumi and Kobuleti need to be closed down urgently because of health issues.
With the support of the EBRD loan, on-lent to the government of Adjara, the new waste disposal facility will be built in Tsetskhlauri. The facility will comply with the EU environment standards and will cover the Adjara region.
The construction of the new landfill is co-financed by a €4 million grant from the Swedish International Development Co-operation Agency (SIDA).
The project includes the construction of a new landfill site and the installation of a gas collection unit. The new waste disposal landfill will enable the Adjara authorities to close the outdated dump sites in Batumi and Kobuleti. This will bring improved waste management services to the citizens of Adjara and will help improve environmental standards.
“The EBRD is pleased to support the Adjara authorities in establishing a modern waste management facility based on a sound business model. This project will bring important environmental benefits to the region and will have a strong demonstration impact on other cities in Georgia. We are especially grateful for the strong support from SIDA. Caring for the environment and bringing improvements to the people and society is a priority for EBRD in Georgia.” said Catarina Bjorlin Hansen, EBRD Regional Director for Caucasus.
This is the third solid waste management project financed by the EBRD in Georgia. In 2009 the Bank provided a €1.6 million loan for the construction of a modern landfill in the city of Rustavi; and in 2015 it made a loan of €7 million for the landfill in Kvemo Kartli region. Both projects were also co-financed by SIDA.
The EBRD is a leading institutional investor in Georgia. Since the start of its operations in the country, the Bank has invested over €3.35 billion in 232 projects in the financial, corporate, infrastructure and energy sectors, with 90 per cent of these investments in the private sector. |
