Work Detail | Faster internet speeds and better TV service are coming soon to Churchill. Bell and MTS officials announced the improvements on Monday, as part of the to-be-merged company’s plan to spend $1 billion over the next five years to improve fibre and wireless broadband services across the province. The two companies, to be called Bell MTS, announced a $3.9-billion deal to merge earlier this year, with the expectation being that it will meet federal approval late this year or in early 2017. Assuming the deal is approved, Bell will introduce Gigabit Fibe Internet — touted as offering average internet speeds that are 20 times faster than currently offered by MTS — to Churchill, as well as its broadband television service Fibe TV. “The upgrade to world-class broadband services will be a welcome and much needed addition to our community,” said Churchill Mayor Michael Spence, in a press release. “This innovative and critical piece of infrastructure will greatly enhance tourism, support regional health care, and provide additional supports for our young people through education and expanded research.” Bell and MTS previously announced plans to provide continuous broadband wireless coverage along Highway 75, as well as the expansion of mobile and wireland broadband networks in northern Manitoba — including along Highway 6 to Thompson. |
