Work Detail Dubai-listed Arabtec Holding’s construction subsidiary has won an $84.7m (AED311m) contract from Expo 2020 Dubai. Arabtec Construction’s contract covers the build of the public realm concourses and arrivals plazas at the expo site. The UAE contracting giant’s scope includes the construction of 26.8ha of public concourses, including entrance plazas, landscaping, lighting water features, irrigation, landscape structures, and furniture. Construction work is scheduled to begin this month, with completion set for Q4 2019. READ: Arabtec subsidiarys consortium wins $871m Adnoc LNG contract Commenting on the contract, Hamish Tyrwhitt, group chief executive officer of Arabtec Holding, said: “We are delighted that Expo 2020 [Dubai] has selected Arabtec to deliver this important element of the Expo Masterplan [pictured]. “This award demonstrates our commitment to diversifying our business and building upon our social infrastructure capability as a core competency,” he added in a missive issued to Dubai Financial Market. Arabtec’s group companies are already involved with other Expo 2020 Dubai projects – in July 2017, the construction unit was awarded a $96m (AED353m) contract to build the expo’s UAE Pavilion. The UAE Pavilion, with National Media Council as its client, has been designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava to resemble a falcon in flight. READ: Expo 2020 Dubais two-year countdown factsheet [2018] Emirates Falcon Electromechanical Company (Efeco) is another Arabtec subsidiary associated with Expo 2020 Dubai’s construction. In a project listing on its website, Efeco states that it will deliver mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) works for the UAE Pavilion, with its scope set to complete in 2019. Approximately 180 countries are expected to participate in Expo 2020 Dubai, which has a total capex budget of $6.8bn (AED25bn) and is the Middle East, Africa, and South Asia’s first world expo. The event will open its doors to the public on 20 October 2020 and run for 173 days, closing on 10 April 2021. The news of Arabtec Construction’s expo win comes on the same day as its announcement of another contract award from fellow-listed firm Damac Properties. The contractor will build 478 villas for the 5km² luxury Akoya Oxygen development through an $81.4m (AED299m) contract. The Dubailand project includes a golf course that was designed by Tiger Woods and carries the Trump brand name.
