A “small fire” broke out at Oman’s Barka 2 water desalination plant over the weekend, operator SMN Power Holding confirmed. The fire started in the low-voltage (LV) switchgear room of the plant, which has since halted operations. No injuries were caused due to the fire, nor were any hazardous substances released. Civil defence authorities extinguished the fire with powder and carbon dioxide. In a missive issued to the Muscat bourse, SMN said the fire damaged “LV breakers controlling the water desalination plant”, as a result of which the facility has shut down. “The site operations and maintenance team started restoration activities immediately in order to bring the plant back in operation as soon as possible,” the statement continued. “As soon as an accurate timing for the start-up of water desalination operations is available, the company will provide an update on any further material impact.” |
