Al Faris UAE, part of the local construction giant Al Faris Group, has revealed details of its work on Route 2020, the metro extension project being implemented for Expo 2020 Dubai.
The company was awarded a contract for the loading, transportation, and lifting of Route 2020’s heaviest precast girders.
Al Faris used a gantry system to lift the girders due to the space restrictions “for tandem crane lift set-up and extra logistics”, as well as cost of transportation, the company said in a statement.
Initially, precast girders weighing 426 tonnes (t) were loaded using Al Faris’s SBL900 gantry system on its Goldhofer 19 axle, THP/SL multi-axle trailer, connected to a 680 horsepower (HP) Heavy Duty Prime Mover. The gantry was set up using Liebherr’s 100t All-Terrain Crane and Forklift.

The precast girders were then lifted and erected on the metro column using Al Faris’s 650t crawler crane with SSL2 configuration and a 42m main boom. Al Faris’s engineers, heavy lift managers, and supervisors were on site to ensure operational safety and efficiency.
Transportation and lifting works were implemented at night to avoid busy road traffic.
Al Faris has also been picked to transport 250 metro wagons for Route 2020, from Jebel Ali Port to the metro line.
Commenting on the precast girder job, Kieve Pinto, executive director at Al Faris, said: “A project of this nature with multiple jobs requires detailed planning and optimised utilisation of equipment.

“All of this was done in-house by our competent engineers and technicians.”
Expolink, a consortium of Alstom, Acciona, and Gulermack, was awarded the $2.8bn (AED10.6bn) contract to develop Route 2020 in October 2016.
Route 2020 extends 15km from Nakheel Harbour and Tower Station on Dubai Metros Red Line, comprising 11.8km of elevated track and 3.2km of underground track.
The extension comprises seven stations, including an interchange station, one station at the Expo 2020 Dubai site, three elevated stations, and two underground stations.
