BHOPAL: Ahead of assembly polls scheduled to be held this year end, the state government waived power bills and dues amounting to Rs 5,179 crore and announced the implementation of fixed power tariff scheme in a bid to benefit 1.60 crore labourers and below poverty line (BPL) families. Inaugurating a state-level’Jankalyan Sambal Yojana here on Tuesday, chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said that poor families can avail electricity connection at a fixed rate of Rs 200 per month. Besides this, the government has also waived off their power dues and announced to withdraw cases of power theft and illegal connections against them. "The government has decided to waive off all power dues of poor families which had been complaining of excessive billing or high tariff. Camps will be organised in each district, in July and August months, to waive off power tariff and distribute zero tariff certificates. The government will bear a financial burden of more than Rs 5000 crore under this scheme. All cases of power theft and illegal connections will also be withdrawn," said Chouhan while addressing the beneficiaries. Chouhan said that consumers availing flat rate power benefit of Rs 200 per month will be allowed to use four bulbs, two fans, a water cooler and a television. Those who have not applied for new electricity connections will be given connections free of charge, he said. "The scheme is for poor families to ease their financial burden and provide electricity at cheaper rates. The objective of ‘Bill Mafi and Bijli Baqaya Mafi schemes is welfare of the people", said Chouhan. Paying tributes to BJP ideologue Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay, Chouhan said that BJPruled governments have imposed taxes on rich people only to help the poor through welfare schemes. He said that Sambal scheme will give support to the poor families, irrespective of any caste, colour or creed. "The state government has also launched ‘housing for all’ scheme, to provide pattas (land) and affordable houses to poor families. In four years, everyone in the state will have his own house", said the chief minister.
