Work Detail Road work underway on the U.S. 45 Bypass from Channing Way to the overpass on Interstate 40 is not the first phase of work that will later take place farther south on the bypass.

“There is no connection,” said Nichole Lawrence, community relations officer for the Tennessee Department of Transportation. “Delta Contracting Co. … repaved a road that gets over 40,000 vehicles each day. They were working at night, because it is a high-traffic area.”

Woody Ellis, Delta Contracting Company office manager, said the project should be finished by Oct. 31.

“We still have quite a bit of work to do … ramp work, which have been milled out and a lift of asphalt. But, we are subject to the weather,” Ellis said.

Lawrence said the cost of the project was $2 million.

She said the state is hopeful that a separate project for modification of the intersection at the bypass and Carriage House Drive could begin by August 2017.

Under the plan, Casey Jones Lane will be realigned to allow left turns for those driving north.

Eliminating the U-turn for drivers should improve the safety of this intersection while increasing efficiency along the 45 Bypass.

The redesign also includes the rebuilding of the Interstate 40 on- and off-ramps at the bypass.

The first phase of eliminating a U-turn on the 45 Bypass at I-40 exit 80 was completed in March after the State of Tennessee purchased a portion of the property where Phillips 66 convenience store is located, at 1929 U.S. 45 Bypass.

A portion of the store will remain in an abbreviated manner, and fuel pumps will remain onsite.

The amount of the purchase was not disclosed.

John Schroer, commissioner of the state Department of Transportation, announced plans for the project during a meeting at the Old Country Store in September 2014.

When the Keith Short Bypass was built in 1964, it had an average of 3,180 vehicles per day.
