Work Detail The Al Rayyan Road upgrade project in Qatar has been completed, as per an announcement by Six Construct. The project saw the improvement of a 2.9km stretch of road, said to be one of the main arteries in Doha. “The site team’s major role was to construct two massive concrete underpasses, each 650m long, 50m wide and up to 15m deep,” commented Nicolas Bruyninckx, project director of Al Rayyan Road. The Ashghal project team has opened the road for ‘beneficial use’, which signifies that work is nearly complete. Under beneficial use, the public can drive on the newly-built permanent road, while minor activities – such as landscaping – are completed. Ashghal is a Public Works Authority that was established in 2004, and is responsible for the planning, design, procurement, construction, delivery, and asset management of all infrastructure projects and public buildings in Qatar. “Both underpasses have been fully built, and each underpass was built using 260,000m3 of concrete, and 20,000T of reinforcement, on top of which 80,000T of asphalt was laid. Apart from the underpasses, the team also completed three cable tunnels, reaching a total length of 1.1km. They also built three critical substations and pulled all LV/MV cables required to energise the street lighting,” added Bruyninckx. The road section is the first expressway project that will see substantial completion this year, and is also the first to open since new management was appointed at the Public Works Authority.
