Work Detail Austin, Texas bluegrass band Wood & Wire will open the International Bluegrass Music Museum's fall benefit concert series Friday, Sept. 9, when they perform for the third time in Owensboro.

"We love Owensboro," said Trevor Smith, banjo player in the acoustic bluegrass band. "Everybody that runs that organization is really good to work with."

Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and the show will begin at 7 p.m. at the museum, 117 Daviess St.

Wood & Wire has played several notable festivals and venues like Old Settlers Music Festival, Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival, Austin City Limits Music Festival, the International Bluegrass Museum Association's World of Bluegrass and the Telluride Bluegrass Festival.

Smith said the group is excited to come back to Owensboro, having played the fall concert series last year, and the ROMP music festival this year. At ROMP, Smith said the group played just after and just before some of their heroes -- Larry Sparks and the Del McCoury Band.

He said they also enjoyed visiting the bluegrass museum for the first time, because it was well-curated and because of the artifacts on display.

The group will play traditional bluegrass music with a lot of original tunes Friday. They will play some new songs from "The Coast," a live album released in February, and some newer songs that are planned for their upcoming studio album.

Before Wood & Wire's February release, the band offered what the men have coined "The Woodshed Sessions, Vol. I," a collection of six traditional tunes recorded around one microphone.

Tony Kamel, guitarist for the group, said they plan to put out new music every year, whether it's the wood shed sessions, live music or original music.

Kamel and Smith will be joined by the band's mandolin player Billy Bright and bassist Dom Fisher for the show at the museum.

"That stage is really fun to play," Smith said. "It's kind of old-timey, intimate and we're just thrilled to come back up there because we love playing Kentucky."

According to Katie Keller, marketing director for the bluegrass museum, funds generated from the concert series contribute to the educational programs offered there.

Keller said Wood & Wire is a good band to showcase because they represent where bluegrass has come from, and also where it's headed in the future. They are a young talent, she said, who can play in a traditional style, but are also progressive in some respects.

The concerts are a great way for locals to see how bluegrass music is evolving across the country, she said.

"It's almost like we're spreading the word of bluegrass through live music and showing how wonderful this art form is," Keller said. "It's also helping us to educate people about the genre and about these incredible players that come through."

Season tickets for the benefit concert series sold out soon after the dates and artists were released last month, she said, however can still be available if a season ticket holder doesn't use their ticket. In order to be on the list to receive this ticket on a first-come, first-served basis, Keller said to visit the bluegrass museum website and register to be on their email list. If tickets become available, those on the email list will be notified.
