Work Detail The University of Georgia’s Athletic Association board of directors approved just over $13 million in renovation projects at Sanford Stadium, Stegeman Coliseum and the UGA golf course in a Friday meeting.
The nonprofit corporation will spend $5.27 million on the second phase of an interior renovation for the Coliseum, $4.35 million to expand the golf teams’ clubhouse by 4,000 square feet, $2.1 million for new LED advertising lighting in Sanford Stadium, and $1 million for an upgrade to the football stadium’s fire alarm system, combining what are now four separate systems into one and bringing the system up to code, UGA Athletic Director Greg McGarity told the board.
McGarity also told the board construction on the UGA indoor football facility, now underway near the Coliseum, is on schedule and within budget.
UGA has raised about $28 million toward the construction of the $30 million building through the Athletic Association’s new Magill Society, he said; the society has also collected $1 million for the golf clubhouse and $1 million toward upgrading the women’s soccer stadium, he said.
Discussions on another construction project are also underway — changes for the west end of the football stadium.
Those plans include a new locker room for the Georgia football team and additional restroom and concession facilities for fans — but not adding seats to make the stadium into a bowl.
“The view from the bridge will always remain as it is now,” McGarity said after Friday’s meeting in the Georgia Center for Continuing Education.
The Stegeman Coliseum project includes replacing every seat and a new scoreboard; the Sanford Stadium project will install a continuous ribbon of the “latest and greatest” LED lighting around the stadium, for advertisers and for announcements during UGA graduation, which is also held in the stadium. The lights won’t be in use when the stadium isn’t, he said.
Board members also heard the unaudited financial report from the 2016 fiscal year that ended June 30.
UGA took in about $124 million in revenues, vs. $116 million in operating expenses, said Ryan Nesbit, UGA vice president for finance and administration, who is also the Athletic Association Treasurer.
The Athletic Association had about $27 million of reserves available at the end of the fiscal year, in addition to about $40.1 million invested with the University of Georgia Foundation, according to Nesbit’s treasurer’s report.
However, about $12.7 million of those reserves were committed to previously approved construction projects
The board approved spending another $5.4 million of the reserves on the four new construction projects.
