Work Detail | ScratchyCAD’s new software, which will be introduced at the World Maker Faire this October, aims to bring block-based programming language to the 3D design world. Users will be able to create and modify 3D models for 3D printing, as well as generate animations, video games, and interactive 3D websites that can be viewed from virtual reality headsets. “What makes ScratchyCAD unique is how it brings together computer programming and computer-aided design in a simple interface with drag and drop style blocks,” said a statement from ScratchyCAD. “The user is able to access complex programming functions to define objects such as shapes, arrays, materials, lights, and simulations. Advanced 3D modeling software takes this parametric approach to automate complex design tasks allowing for faster iteration during the design process.” The company is hoping to crowdsource the software launch through Kickstarter with a funding goal of $25,000. Connected to the Kickstarter campaign, the company will release a set of courses directed at beginners. Each course highlights different applications, including parametric modeling for 3D printing, video game design, interactive website development, virtual reality, and STEAM education. A software presentation is scheduled during the World Maker Faire in New York on Oct. 1. Visitors will have the opportunity to play with ScratchyCAD alongside the creators. “ScratchyCAD is a great tool for learning complex concepts like algorithmic and parametric design in a simple-to-use, beginner-friendly interface, while maintaining enough complexity for advanced users to create 3D printable objects, VR worlds, simulations, and animations,” said Juan Carlos Orozco, lead developer. |
