Work Detail The North Peace Regional Airport has a pair of new vehicles in its fleet.

The airport recently received two aircraft rescue firefighting vehicles (ARFF), along with axes, pry bars, fire resistant blankets, stretchers, firefighter gear and other equipment, Transport Canada announced Friday, Sept. 9.

The equipment was delivered earlier this summer through the Airports Capital Assistance Program, with the two ARFFs coming in at a cost of $1.9 million.

Jim McKnight, president of the North Peace Airport Society, said in a statement that the equipment will boost the safety of airport operations. The airport has added five members to its staff, and anticipates hiring two more, with the new equipment.

"“The North Peace Regional Airport is vital to the growth of the North Peace region and a key component in community development through carrier and route options," he said.

"With ongoing project support from the Government of Canada, the airport is able to continue to address the region's increased travel demands and passenger growth. With ACAP's support, the purchase of new aircraft rescue firefighting vehicles will assist in ensuring the safe and efficient operation at our airport.”

The airport has received more than $14.5 million for 13 safety projects through ACAP since 1995, Transport Canada says. That includes recent taxiway upgrades, lighting, a new snowblower, and a pair of runway sweepers.

“The Government of Canada recognizes that safe and efficient airports are vital to the economic and social well-being of smaller communities," federal Transport Minister Marc Garneau said.

"In addition to supporting personal travel and tourism, local airports are key connectors for business, health care, social services, and emerging resource development sectors. The North Peace Regional Airport is an important transportation hub in this region and our investment in these two ARFFs is helping to improve safety of this key airport.”
