Work Detail A new housing rental development specifically designed for low income renters could be on its way to Phoenixville, according to a press release from Petra Community Housing.

Phoenixville borough councilman Michael Kuznar stressed the plan is still in the preliminary review stage and is not final.

Petra, formerly known as Phoenixville Homes, has been operating since 1994. The new development, SteelTown Village, will be located on Mason and Wheatland Streets off of Route 23.

"As Phoenixville continues its trend of rapid population growth and luxury offerings, the opportunities for existing, lower-income residents are dwindling," a Petra spokesperson said in the press release. SteelTown is designed as solution to that problem.

The development will include 48 rental units ranging from one bedroom to three bedrooms, and will house a diverse population of elderly, military veterans, persons with disabilities and workforce families.

Petra added that residents would be provided with job search assistance, cleaning and housekeeping, transportation, education, and child care for free.

“In addition to providing affordable housing and improving the lives of a number of Phoenixville residents, the development will boost the economy by creating jobs, adding street parking that did not previously exist to an otherwise congested area, and contributing to the borough’s tax-funded entities such as schools," Petra Community Housing Director Steve Kambic said in a statement.

Petra submitted a Low Income Housing Tax Credit application to the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Authority in March. The application was accepted in July.

The location at Mason and Wheatland streets was formerly a grinding wheel operation and steel dumping site and currently has "environmental contaminants," Petra said. Construction will begin in the spring of 2017 once contaminants have been removed.
