Work Detail | Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries Ministry was yesterday directed to assess the actual amount of sugar consumed in the country. Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa said the available figures does not reflect the actual demand and subjects the nation to endless shortage of sweeteners. He wondered how can Kenya with nearly equal population with Tanzania consume about 800,000 tones against 450,000 tones in the country. "We want the ministry to conduct a thorough assessment amid a nationwide campaign to improve production of the sugar crop," Mr Majaliwa said when responding to a direct question from Jaku Hashim Ayoub (CCM). The MP had questioned about the government measures to end sugar and rice shortage in the country. He said there are direct and indirect features showing there is serious shortage of sugar in the country. "We are working to find out the actual demand," the primer said "we have met the local producers but it appears it can take them four years to cover the demand." He said the government had however imported sugar to cover the demand, a consignment the premier said had no effect on local produces. He said efforts are also underway to invite investors in sugar production. "We had serious sugar shortage before but now I can assure you that the problem is solved," Mr Majaliwa said. In another development, the Prime Minister said the government had directed the Tanzania Cashew nut Board to ensure all cashewnut auctions are conducted at district level as opposed to regional level where only few farmers participate. Mr Majaliwa said the government has also shelved five burden taxes to cashew nut farmers in attempt to improve farmers' outputs. "I want the board and all local leaders to oversee execution of the government order," he charged. |
