Work Detail | For the second time this year, Eugene Water & Electric Board customers can buy 3-gallon emergency water storage bottles from the utility at a discounted price. Starting Thursday, and as long as supplies last, EWEB customers can order the containers — which are bisphenolA-free, with reusable twist caps — online at www.eweb.org/waterreliability. Orders are limited to four jugs per household. Because of high demand and limited supplies, EWEB is asking customers who previously got containers not to sign up for more, in order to give other customers a chance to receive them. There are about 2,500 jugs available for preorder. Each container is $5, and the cost will be applied to customers’ water bills when the jugs are available for pickup in early October. One dollar of every purchase will be donated to the American Red Cross EWEB says it subsidizes the cost of the containers to remind customers of the importance of having an emergency kit in the event of a major earthquake or another calamity. Storing an emergency supply of water — plus food and other life-sustaining items — is a critical component in any household emergency kit, officials say. Residents are advised they need a minimum of 1 gallon of water per person per day for drinking and basic sanitation. The Springfield Utility Board and Rainbow Water District also are taking preorders for the jugs. Rainbow began taking orders two weeks ago after the utility included a notice in its recent bill about their availability. Those customers can pick up the jugs from the Rainbow’s office in early October. SUB purchased 600 jugs and will conduct a random drawing to dole them out. The sign up form will be available in the utility’s upcoming fall customer newsletter with a deadline of October 15. It will be notify customers by mail if they’ve won with the distribution slated for November. |
